Note to A Lot of Companies – Marked Urgent

Dear Employer:

I know you’re wondering if I really want to be here.

So am I.

The last 2 years have been tough – and a lot of my colleagues have moved on.

I saw the company communiqué about increasing employee rewards – that’s a good thing because the competition is doing the same thing.

Compensation is important.

Even though no one actually asked me, let me tell you what’s MORE important.   If you want to know why you’re losing people – well, here are a couple of things to give some thought to.

  • Affirmation is a lot more than important than you realize. The pandemic has made me realize that I want to be around people who care – we have a lot of people in key roles that don’t.  If you want to manage profits – start by helping these people find a new career.
  • I like to think what I do matters – it would be nice to know that you do too. And a little hint – the personal touch does not include one more motivational memo with little stars and exploding balloons.
  • Make an investment in me – help me grow – help me develop. I really like the notion of being the best I can be. Some of my friends walked away because other companies were clearly willing to do that.
  • Take a long, hard look at your leaders. You still have command and control types that have no contribution to make other than to aggravate the people saddled with reporting to them. They’re septic – replace them with people who have my back instead of stay on it.
  • This remote thing is really, really tough. Cut the number of meetings – they’re killing us.
  • This remote thing is really, really tough Part II. Help me connect on a personal level from time to time. Give me a teammate to partner with – let’s talk about something other than work – put together a virtual social hour or something. Life is short – lighten up.
  • Let me know how I’m doing – and for gosh sakes don’t make the only time you give me feedback at the end of the year when we go through the Performance Review Dance. That dance is tired – and it just makes me mad.
  • Tell me where we’re going – why this is a place that offers me a future. And talk plainly – not with Business Speak Gobbledy Gook.
  • Stop TALKING about a positive culture – start role modeling it.

Well, I guess that’s enough for now. I have work to do.

So do you.

Regards,

Your Employee
